#Researchwithoutborders: From Austria to Australia!

1

As part of our #researchwithoutborders initiative, we’re showcasing cross-border, collaborative projects from around the world. Professor Atanas Atanasov, Head of the Molecular Biology department at the Institute of Genetics and Animal Breeding, Polish Academy of Sciences, writes to us about a collaborative project that was carried out across four countries. With contributing labs in Switzerland, Austria and Australia, this project bridged a gap of over 8,800 miles!

The published research work, available on PubMed here, aimed to identify novel antiosteoporotic inhibitors of the enzyme 17beta-HSD2. The work involved:

Pharmacophore computer modeling, performed in Austria, and
Biological activity testing performed in Switzerland.
The compounds provided for the biological testing came from four different labs located at:
-The University of Vienna, Austria
-The University of Innsbruck, Austria, and
-Griffith University, Australia.

We think that these kind of projects are exemplary of the power of collaborations in science, especially in the current political climate we live in.
