Surprisingly, the number of telecommuting jobs in space ricerca is increasing, with organizations slowly opening up their doors to the public. A job offer on Flexjobs, a reputed telecommute job site, ha pubblicato un'apertura per un ingegnere meccanico senior di veicoli spaziali, mentre l'Agenzia spaziale europea recluta consulenti freelance per vari progetti a breve termine. Considerando la vasta gamma di discipline accademiche e di competenze che compongono un team in un'organizzazione di ricerca spaziale, questo non è sorprendente. Come delineato in questo articolo, “The most frequently hired academic disciplines include aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, software engineering but also astrofisica, astronomy, fisica e matematica. The successful candidates most usually have a master’s level degree. Dato che non è facile costruire un team che comprenda tutte le competenze di cui sopra in una singola organizzazione, l'economia freelance ha un enorme spazio qui. È naturale che queste aziende guardino ai siti web del mercato per assumere esperti da diversi background per progetti specifici. Anche le organizzazioni spaziali assumere scrittori scientifici a distanza.

Il futuro della ricerca è collaborazione between individuals, organizations and countries. Perhaps companies will follow NASA’s example and start working with individuals and teams without a location or policy restriction. In the process, they will also end up saving the time and cost it takes to recruit specialist talent in-house for only short-term projects. The bigger the collaboration, the brighter the innovation.  Only then can we reach for the stars, literally!
